Video | Struggle on the Nile

Approximately 30,000 people live on al-Warraq Island — located in Greater Cairo’s Nile River — where they face an uncertain future due to government development plans for the area, which remain undefined. In this video, Mada Masr visits Warraq Island amid the ongoing struggle over its land, exploring the island with one of its residents. The video is interspersed with the commentary of an imaginary authority figure, represented in voiceovers from the 1971 social drama Chitchat on the Nile.
