A police officer was killed early Monday during a security operation in Gharbiya, an Interior Ministry source told Al-Ahram.
The victim was shot by gunmen from a car that was stopped at a security checkpoint, the source said.
The security operation had targeted outlaws and fugitives in the Nile Delta governorate.
Another officer was injured in the attack, Al-Ahram reported.
Egypt has been witnessing violence against security forces since the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.
The latest of such attacks occurred earlier this month when a police checkpoint near the upscale Marina summer resort on the north coast of Egypt was attacked, killing a police major and four soldiers.
The targeting of police stations and police officers has become a regular occurrence in the country in recent months, especially prevalent in Nile Delta provinces.
