Azhar University office building set ablaze

A fire started in the office building of the faculty of commerce at Al-Azhar University on Wednesday in the east Cairo suburb of Nasr City. According to the state-owned Ahram Gate, a number of unidentified assailants threw Molotov cocktails at the building, which caused the fire.

This is not the first time a campus building is vandalized – in April, students destroyed parts of the Fundamentals of Religion faculty building and escaped before security forces arrived.

The university board recently decided to expel six new students, bringing the total number of dismissed students since the beginning of the second semester to 139.

Earlier this month, the head of Al-Azhar University, Osama al-Abd, expelled 76 students for their involvement in acts of violence and riots on campus. 36 of the dismissed students are from Al-Azhar University in Zagazig.

Two Azhar students died in March during clashes that erupted between the students and security forces on campus, in addition to the dozens of students currently incarcerated. Campuses all over Egypt have been witnessing increasing violence since the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi in July.
