Officer killed by car bomb in 6th of October City

A central security officer was killed on Wednesday morning when a homemade bomb attached to his car exploded on his way to work in 6th of October City, the Ministry of Interior announced on its official Facebook page. Two conscripts were injured in the explosion.

Another central security officer was also killed on Wednesday during a security operation in Alexandria. According to the ministry, wanted individuals opened fire on police forces as they were approaching a terrorist den. Both the officer and one of the targeted individuals died in the crossfire.

Lethal attacks on police officers have been frequent in recent months.

In January, Sinai-based militant group Ansar Beit Al-Maqdes claimed responsibility for an explosion that targeted the Cairo Security Directorate. The same group also claimed responsibility for a failed assassination attempt against Minister of Interior Mohamed Ibrahim in September.

The Ministry of Interior announced on Wednesday that it had carried out an extensive security campaign in the last 24 hours aimed at apprehending wanted fugitives and retrieving unlicensed firearms. According to the ministry, the campaign resulted in over 6,000 arrests, the confiscation of 242 weapons and 463 unlicensed motorcycles, in addition to the repossession of three stolen cars.
