Fashion trends for 2014

Put away your crop tops: tummies will be covered in 2014

The year 2013 has been a controversial one for fashion. This two-faced year had its soft and rough edges. Although it brought back the finesse of the 1920s, it also embraced the stiffness of army attire, combat boot and camouflage.

Many of the 2013 fashion trends will fizzle away after the tonight’s countdown, and some will continue into 2014. Here is a list of what to keep and what to leave behind:

Au revoir, skinny pants, although it breaks my heart. But come on, we have used and abused those slacks over and over for the last few years. It is time to give your slims and skinny a rest and give way to boot-leg and flared pants.

Wedge sneakers are a faux pas in 2014. The craze in footwear is no longer on the must-have list of every young woman. From now on, sneakers will go back to being only for sports. Enjoy your jog.

UGGs are out too. Say adieu to the furry, fuzzy and comfy Australian boots as they sadly leave the fashion arena, taking away the only shoe craze that was actually feet-friendly.

The only uplifting fashion “don’t” of this past year — mini shorts — are out. Despite the fact that only 0.5% of the world’s population could pull these shorts off, they have lingered around the fashion world long enough to make many curvy women hate their lives. Well, let us rejoice the mini short-free 2014.

Crop tops are out. Whether you bought them or got out your old cropped-Ts tucked away since the 1980s, it is time to put them back where they came from: 2014 is all about covering the tummy.

Spiked leather is a no-no. Although this Goth or punk-inspired look miraculously found its way onto the runaway, it is quickly disappearing, giving way to a more conservative look for 2014.

Now that we have highlighted what’s leaving your closet, here is a list of what should stay in your wardrobe for the coming year:

Whether it is an embellished headband, turban or flapper dress, anything inspired by the 1920s will continue into the 2014 fashion year. Rejoice, the Gatsby-inspired look is still in!

“Le smoking” continues. The smoking or tux-inspired jacket gets to stay for another year, spreading a hint of masculine elegance over all fashionistas.

Nothing political about this but combat boots are hot. Those rough-looking shoes stay an important item in street fashion for the coming year. Do not take it too far, though: this is only a fashion trend.

Black and white surfaced in 2013 and the mix continues to occupy the runway in 2014, in both prêt a porter and evening wear.

Lace-up shoes started last year and continue into 2014. Although they can look bit manly, pair your lace-up shoes with a flirty dress or skirt, et voila!

Bermudas get to stay, why? Je ne sais pas. Although they’re unflattering and boyish, those long cullottes get to plague us with their runway presence for another year.

Plaid . . . checkered . . . carreaux . . . whichever name you call it, the pattern of note stays “en vogue.”
