President amends election law for overseas voters

Interim President Adly Mansour amended on Thursday Egypt’s election law,  just a few weeks before a referendum on the draft constitution is due to take place.

The amendments enable Egyptians abroad to vote before the specified day of the referendum or elections.  They will have to first register their names with their respective embassies using their national IDs.

Monitoring of the elections and the vote count for Egyptians abroad will be conducted by members of the Egyptian diplomatic mission in each embassy.

According to the amendments, all voters will only be allowed to vote in the constituencies mentioned on their official IDs, and are not allowed to vote outside of these areas.

In addition, the elections or referendum can be run over one or two days, according to a decision by the High Electoral Commission, and election days should end by 9 pm. However, this can be extended upon the order of the judges monitoring the polling stations if required.

Only official IDs or passports including national ID numbers will be permitted as voter identification inside the polling stations.
