Six men have been remanded in custody in connection with the death of a French national in a police station on Tuesday.

Initial reports indicated that 51-year-old teacher Eric Lang was arrested for breaking curfew in the Cairo suburb of Zamalek and taken to Qasr al-Nil police station.

There are unconfirmed reports however that he was arrested during the day and was taken in because he did not have residency papers on his person.

According to news agency DPA the six men were being held in the Qasr al-Nil police station on charges of aggravated theft when they beat Lang to death.
